Our History
Sukarya was born out of the vision of a single person, Meera Satpathy.
It started by identifying needs in the communities it wanted to work in. Basic health and awareness camps were held in and around Delhi with a focus on women, adolescent girls, and children.
On community demand, Sukarya included asthma and allergies, heart issues, mental health and diabetes.
Inauguration of the Sukarya head office in Gurugram, a bustling metropolis in the state of Haryana where the rich and poor co-exist. Work commenced in nearby slums and villages. Interaction with communities had already built trust. The time was right to conceptualise and implement the Maternal Child Health and Nutrition programme, which was an area that needed urgent attention.
Women across the country were becoming increasingly aware of their rights within the house and outside. The Gender Equality and Women’s Economic Empowerment programme was therefore announced keeping women centre stage in the programme planning process.
To strengthen the financial health of women and bring to them a sense of dignity and pride, the “Spices and Cereals Processing Unit for Livelihood Enhancement” initiative was launched in Sukarya’s own office premises.
Reaching adolescent girls in time so that they could be healthy mothers and women in their later years, the “Kishori Shakti Yojna” and the “Saath Saath” Programmes addressed their sexual and reproductive health and nutrition needs and were launched in three villages of Gurugram.
The “Anemia Prevention and Control” programme was launched in 10 villages of Gurugram, with institutional funding from Population Foundation of India.
Sukarya’s footprint in the local community got further cemented with the setting up of the Sehat centre and the Physiotherapy Unit that were inaugurated in Sukarya’s office premises.
To make access to health care easier, a Mobile Diagnostic Clinic was launched through the “Promoting Rural Health through Mobile Health Services” programme in six villages of Pataudi Block in Haryana.
The year also saw the “School Health Programme for Urban Slums” being set up in Gurugram
The year 2006 was important also because Sukarya’s work was recognised as it got awarded with the ‘Highest Pledge raising NGO’ title in the Hutch Delhi Half Marathon.
Entering the “participatory phase” where Sukarya had joined hands with target groups in its project areas, the “Better Health through Community-Based Health Centre” programme was initiated in village Bandhwari, Gurugram with the support of Incentive Destinations and Charities Aid Foundation, India.
Taking the work of empowering women to the next level, existing Self Help Groups (SHG) were strengthened and new ones set up to promote microenterprise development in four villages of Gurugram. The project received support from Godfrey Philips India and Charities Aid Foundation India.
Launched the programme, “Mobilising Men as Partners” to support women and children related health programme in 13 villages of Tauru Block Mewat with support from Bird Group
Additionally, village youth and others benefitted from the launch of the “Self Reliance Through Skill Training Programme” in Ghata vllage of Gurugram.
The launch of the knowledge-based intervention for Reproductive Health Advocacy and Action (KIRAN) in 29 villages of Mewat was a logical next step for Sukarya in its quest for improving lives of women and children in its project settings and around. The programme is in partnership with the Population Foundation of India.
Implementing the “Basic Health Care Services Slum Communities (PAHAL)” programme in two slum colonies of Gurugram.
Sukarya was also awarded the ‘Highest pledge raising NGO’ citation as part of a corporate challenge in the Airtel Delhi Half Marathon.
The Integrated Rural Development Programme in Village Mangar of Faridabad with support of the Bird Group was a significant next step for Sukarya.
Also, setting up specialised clinics on “Improving Maternal and Child Health” in 15 villages of Mewat and Jhajjar Districts of Haryana with the support of Power Grid Corporation of India Limited.
This was followed with the launch of the “Better Health through Community-Based Health Centre” in Waliawas Village, Gurugram with support of Religare and Aegis Global.

Sukarya emerged as a favourite with the health and fitness community of the capital city as it got the ‘Highest pledge raising NGO’ award as part of the corporate challenge in the Airtel Delhi half Marathon. Recognition of its longstanding work also came with the Empanelment in the National CSR Hub TISS Mumbai.
Sukarya was with other active and reputed NGOs as part of ‘Give India’ on 22 May 2013, making its presence official in the social and development community.
A unique programme was set up, namely, the “Comprehensive Health Care Service for Construction Workers in New Delhi” with support of the Bird Group.

Launch of the “Improving Maternal and Child Health through Specialised Clinics” (Hiffazat 2) programme in nine villages of Mewat.
Implementing the “Improving Mother and Child Health in Urban Slums” programme in four slums in Delhi was a major move in including many of the marginalised, migrant communities that subsisted below the poverty line.
Taking the work on social welfare forward, the “Community-Based Health Education and Livelihood Programme” was launched in 30 villages of Mewat District in collaboration with Freedom from Hunger, India.
Taking the government’s clarion call on each one teach one, “Education on Wheels” programme began in two slums in Gurugram with the support of IGEP Foundation.
Launched the initiative for women empowerment in select villages of Haryana by ENACTUS – “Programme Auric” which gave all the women associated with Sukarya a reason to dream and aspire for a better future.
Sukarya achieved the unique distinction of becoming an accredited member of the Credibility Alliance for desirable norms.
Launched the Spices and Cereals Processing (SACP) Training Programme, “Aap Ke Saathi” to boost economic empowerment efforts.
With donor support, the “Urban Slum Health Action Programme (USHA)” was successfully implemented in eight slums of Delhi and two slums of Gurugram with the support of Amadeus India
The Integrated Rural Development Programme or IRDP in three villages of Tijara block, district Alwar, Rajasthan brought together several elements of Sukarya’s ongoing programmes.
Sukarya got empanelled on the Indian Institute of Corporate Affairs (IICA) CSR Implementing Agencies Hub (I.A. Hub) as a credible implementing agency for CSR.
Serving the needs of its communities with sincerity and commitment, Sukarya launched ARMMAN‘s mMitra Voice a call Programme in 30 villages of Mewat and 10 slums in Delhi and Gurugram.
In June 2016, the Founder and Chairperson of Sukarya, Meera Satpathy was invited by the United States for a Women Summit convened by the White House in Washington D.C. Soon after, Sukarya was incorporated as a non-profit in the State of Washington in the United States.

Sukarya organised its first international Conference on Public Health & Nutrition: Freeing Future Generations from Malnutrition in New Delhi on September 29, 2018
Sukarya was awarded GuideStar India Platinum Certification.
Launched mMitra SBI Umeed programme in 461 villages in Mewat.
Launched the “Rural Community Health Action (RCHA)” Programme in 30 villages of Tijara Block Alwar district, Rajasthan and 30 villages of Nuh block, Nuh district Haryana with the support of Bird Group.
Launched USHA in eight slums in Gurugram with the support of Wipro Cares. Launched USHA in four slums in Delhi.
