According to the Global Gender Gap Report released by the World Economic Forum (WEF) in 2021, India was ranked 140 on the Gender Gap Index (GGI) among 156 countries polled. Gender inequality in India refers to health, education, economy and socio-political inequalities between men and women.
Largely the access of knowledge and information on adolescent reproductive & sexual health and gender education is non-existent in India. In urban slums and rural villages the situation is worse since most families live in vulnerable conditions with minimal resources.
The objectives of Sukarya’s Gender Equality Programme are to:
- Provide basic knowledge and awareness to adolescent girls (10-19 years age group) on reproductive and sexual health; and build their knowledge & skills on family life;.
- Educating them with basic digital skills, enhancing their abilities and employability with better understanding of gender discrimination, social stigma, issues and challenges;
- Learn the impact of Water, Sanitation & Hygiene (WASH) for maintaining good health at the community level, community engagement and communication.
Long-term impact of this programme:
Around 5000 adolescent girls would be empowered on adolescent, reproductive & sexual health issues; family life and gender education. They would be trained to be the peers to other adolescents living in their communities. Overall health and gender empowerment would be ensured to create a healthy society.
