India lives in its villages. With this concept in mind Sukarya has resolved to improve the socio-economic conditions at the village level. Integrated Rural Development Programme aims to achieve this aspect and create a model or ideal village with an aim to replicate the success in other far reached areas.
An integrated intervention is a comprehensive approach in the areas of Maternal & Child Health, Girl Education, Women Empowerment, Income Generation activities, awareness of safe and clean environment in the village. The first IRDP project was implemented in 2011 in the Village Manger of district Faridabad, Haryana.
The Integrated Rural Development Project (IRDP) aims for an overall development to make a model village. It is implemented through different developmental activities with a special focus on preventive & curative health services, women empowerment (entreprenuership) , capacity building of village level authorities, and creating awareness about environmental hygiene amongst the community members.
Strategies and activities of the project:
We worked on four key areas like education, health, economic empowerment and cleaner environment to help build a healthier and a better society. The program was strategized and activities were planned in such a manner that all the program components were interlinked with each other. It is focussed on involving the community and strengthening village level committees.
This module based intervention was started in 2011 and completed in March 2015. The end line survey clearly reflected the remarkable quantitative and qualitative results of the program. Over the span of four years, several sensitizations and capacity building initiatives have been undertaken in the target villages.
A holistic approach towards generating community awareness and strengthening mechanisms was adopted to ensure the following:
- clean water and environment
- drinking water system at village chaupal
- biogas installation
- sensitize the use of green energy
- installation of waste bins at strategic locations
- strengthening maternal and child health through monthly check up camps for children, adolescent girls, pregnant and lactating mothers and immunization services in tandem with government health service providers.
Reinforcement is done through training sessions for sensitizing issues like general health and hygiene, village sanitation, education for girl children. The session also includes women empowerment through newly formed SHGs and fostering income generating activities like selling of spices, paper bags etc. Computer education and vocational training for children is another important activity.
